Enel (ENEI.MI) and Eni (ENI.MI), two Italian energy companies, have secured an agreement to allow electric car users to recharge their vehicles using the infrastructure networks of both companies.

With over 20,000 charge outlets, Enel’s energy e-service company Enel X and Eni’s Be Charge operate Italy’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging networks.

Consumers will be able to charge their cellphones via the Enel X, Be Charge, and Eni Apps under the terms of the deal.
“The interoperability of charging infrastructures is a critical component of Enel X’s strategy to spread electric mobility in Italy,” said Federico Caleno, head of e-mobility at Enel X.

Enel, which has over 13,000 EV charging stations, wants to accelerate the growth of its e-mobility company and has stated it may split off and perhaps list its charging network.

Be Charge, which was acquired by Eni earlier this year as part of Be Power, is controlled by Eni’s retail and renewables unit, which plans to go public next year.
