A Two-player Push to Spell a Rebirth of Your In-car Navigation Experience

The human society is built upon a host of defining factors, but to tell you the truth, none reflect it better than our own ability of growing on a consistent basis. We say this because the stated ability has already brought the world some huge milestones, with technology emerging as quite a major member of the group. The reason why we hold technology in such a high regard is, by and large, predicated upon its skill-set, which guided us towards a reality that nobody could have ever imagined otherwise. Nevertheless, if we look beyond the surface for one hot second, it will become clear how the whole runner was also very much inspired from the way we applied those skills across a real world environment. The latter component, in fact, did a lot to give the creation a spectrum-wide presence, and as a result, initiated a full-blown tech revolution. Of course, the next thing this revolution did was to scale up the human experience through some outright unique avenues, but even after achieving a feat so notable, technology will somehow continue to bring forth the right goods. The same has turned more and more evident in recent times, and assuming one new automotive-themed development pans out just like we envision, it will only put that trend on a higher pedestal moving forward.

The BMW Group has officially announced the launch of a brand-new in-car navigation experience, which will be supported by Mapbox. According to certain reports, the stated experience will arrive on the back of features like an immersive 3D map style with detailed buildings and dynamic lighting, joined by sophisticated navigation features like charging-optimized route planning.  Talk about Mapbox’s role here, the company will contribute a lot towards the creation of those features, and at the same time, it will also give BMW the flexibility needed to integrate data from numerous sources and providers for the purpose of publishing updates continuously and frequently. Moving on, BMW is further going to bank upon Mapbox to facilitate a seamless brand of range prediction and EV-optimized routing. Staying on the routing functionality for another second, it will take into account vehicle characteristics, road data, and charging station data to help drivers plan safer, more efficient, and personalized trips. Apart from it, Mapbox services will integrate with BMW Group’s own cloud systems so to let BMW surface custom content which is relevant in the context of a particular driver. This includes partner charging locations, certified service centers, and other bits of information. Another detail worth a mention here is rooted in the fact that, although data will be naturally at its freshest when the vehicle is connected, the new navigation experience is well-equipped to proactively download map data, thus empowering drivers to continue navigation even in cellular dead zones.

“BMW customers expect a navigation experience that matches the brand’s exceptional standards,” said Stephan Durach, SVP at BMW Group. “They desire an experience that rivals their smartphone’s accuracy and freshness, while seamlessly blending with BMW’s iconic design and integrating with in-car systems such as the EV drivetrain and audio. Mapbox offers the ideal technology that enables us to fulfill these dual objectives.”

As for the design, the development will put a distinctive circular screen positioned at the heart of the dashboard, complimenting the same with expansive curved display which will be placed in a way to ensure easy access for the driver. Coming back to the promised 3D map technology, which again will be provided by Mapbox to optimize each pixel and deliver a visually stunning experience across an array of screen layouts and map styles. An example conveying the same would be how the new MINI offers seven different map styles that dynamically adjust to a driver’s choice of infotainment theme. Rounding up the highlights is the Mapbox Navigation SDK, a feature meant to allow multiple linked displays of maps and routes across the central display, information cluster, and head-up display.

“The Mapbox vision is to empower customers with exceptional navigation experiences that reflect each brand’s uniqueness,” said Peter Sirota, CEO of Mapbox. “This is just the beginning of our journey with BMW, as Mapbox technology empowers the rapid iteration and continuous enhancement of the navigation system, ensuring it remains at the forefront of innovation even after launch.”

But what makes Mapbox an idea candidate for such a job? Well, the answer resides in its ability to power a new generation of location-aware applications. As of today, it’s the only platform that equips organizations with the full set of tools to power the navigation for people, packages, and vehicles everywhere. Mapbox’s excellence in what it does can be understood once you consider it currenty serves more than 4 million registered developers and 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies.
