The human arsenal has always been a little on the loaded side, but mind you, it still hasn’t possessed anything more valuable than that tendency of ours to grow on a consistent basis. This progressive tendency, on our part, has enabled us to hit upon some huge milestones, with technology emerging as quite a major member of the group. The reason why we hold technology in such a high regard is, by and large, predicated upon its skill-set, which ushered us towards a reality that nobody could have ever imagined otherwise. Nevertheless, if we look a little bit closer, it will become clear how the whole runner was also very much inspired from the way we applied those skills across a real-world environment. The latter component, in fact, did a fair amount to give the creation a spectrum-wide presence, and consequentially, kickstart a tech revolution. Of course, this revolution then went on to scale up the human experience from every conceivable direction, but even after achieving such a monumental feat, technology will somehow keep on bringing the right goods. The said trend, now that we think more intently about it, has grown stronger and stronger in recent times, and truth be told, a new development around our automotive space will only turn it into much bigger of a deal moving forward.
General Motors is officially set to invest more than $918 million in further developing four of its US plants, and it will do so with a view to realize an expanded V-8 engine production. As per certain reports, the company will use $854 million of that total just for preparing GM’s facilities to make GM’s sixth generation small block V-8 engine used in the Chevrolet Camaro, light duty pickups, and several large SUVs. Apart from it, the remaining $64 million will likely go to Rochester Operations facility in Rochester, New York, and Defiance Operations in Ohio, thus ensuring that castings and components can support GM’s EV production. This brings us to the question of which facilities are actually included here. Well, the list has named Flint Engine Operations, Bay City, Defiance Operations, and of course, the Rochester Operations as the four beneficiaries.
Let’s start from Flint Engine Operations. Currently employing around 709 workers, the facility will receive an individual investment worth $579 million to turn the plant into a suitable avenue for assembling sixth-generation small block V-8 gasoline engines. Now, while the work is expected to start right away, it will have no impact on its ongoing production of 3.0-liter turbo-diesel used in GM full size light duty pickups during the renovations. Next up, we have Bay City, where an investment worth $216 million should help the facility to build camshafts, connecting rods and machinery that has its utility in manufacturing the engine block. For the third one, we head to Ohio’s Defiance Operations, a 530 people-big facility that will use $47 million to create block castings. It will dedicate another $8 towards casting metal parts for future EVs. Lastly, we have New York’s Rochester Operations factory, which has a $56 million package plotted for it to make EV battery pack parts. This doesn’t include the $12 million it will pick up to facilitate the procurement of other ancillary parts that are often required when working on V-8 production.
“These investments, coupled with the hard work and dedication of our team members in Flint, Bay City, Rochester and Defiance, enable us to build world-class products for our customers and provide job security at these plants for years to come,” said Gerald Johnson, executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability at GM.
The announcement was also well-received by the workers’ community, with Ray Curry, president of United Automobile Workers union, coming out to comment:
“Our union celebrates the announcement of these new investments into our GM facilities, which will benefit our members at Locals 659 (Flint, Michigan), 362 (Bay City, Michigan), 211 (Defiance, Ohio) and 1097 (Rochester, New York). The skill and dedication of UAW members are a key part of GM’s success, and this investment recognizes that our members will remain a vital part of GM’s future.”
